When Tania Lopez started her journey promoting healthy eating and nutrition to children and families in the Bronx, she had no idea it would take her on such a fabulous adventure.

 

With the idea of encouraging discourse around healthy eating and nutrition, Tania took to social media. She created a persona, Coqui The Chef, ( pronounced KOH-kee), based on a species of small frogs located in Puerto Rico. The coquis are named for the sound they make, a singing “Coqui, Coqui” at night. Tania created Coqui with the idea that healthy eating needed a child-friendly mascot.

They are often used by global brands to connect a consumer to a product, but did you know that mascots are also busy working for charitable and community service organizations, helping them develop a special relationship with their audience? This is especially true of community service organizations reaching out to help children.

A mascot can break the ice when meeting groups, and provide a friendly, approachable character, to engage the children in conversation. This can be helpful for health organizations where it's important that the messages are received in a receptive positive environment.

Is Your Mascot A Monster?

It will soon be Halloween - the biggest costume night of the year, and the night when all kinds of strange and wonderful creatures make an appearance. In keeping with the spirit of the time, I thought I'd share with you one of our monster mascots – The Quinsigamond Community College Wyvern.

Mascots can be modelled after animals, characters, objects, people, and fantasy creatures, monsters or any other subject your imagination can conjure. Traditional Halloween monsters are often based on old legends made into horror films, and so the usual line-up includes; Frankenstein, the Mummy, Werewolf, Dracula.

Monsters that are chosen to represent a school, sports team or brand, however, are often based on mythical creatures like dragons or on imaginary comic figures, designed to entertain and make people smile. Monsters are not all scary and frightening - some are just whimsical and fun!
