A mascot is a powerful tool that businesses, organizations, and corporations can use to connect with target audiences, market a brand, garner media attention, and more. While many organizations choose a character to represent their brand, a mascot can simply be your logo brought to life. Aspects of your logo, or even your logo in its entirety, can be crafted to connect with your audiences while staying true to your brand.

 Jamie Bordas, partner at Bordas & Bordas Attorneys, PLLC in West Virginia, had an idea about how to reach youth with a message about anti-bullying and fair play. His firm were already involved in many local community events in and around Wheeling, WV, and he wanted to specifically reach young people with a message that resonated with his organization.

When Tania Lopez started her journey promoting healthy eating and nutrition to children and families in the Bronx, she had no idea it would take her on such a fabulous adventure.

With the idea of encouraging discourse around healthy eating and nutrition, Tania took to social media. She created a persona, Coqui The Chef, ( pronounced KOH-kee), based on a species of small frogs located in Puerto Rico. The coquis are named for the sound they make, a singing “Coqui, Coqui” at night. Tania created Coqui with the idea that healthy eating needed a child-friendly mascot.

When you think about mascots, you might first think about sports mascots, mascots for school athletic events or for professional teams. Big global brands such as Pepsi, McCain, and Crayola have used performers in mascot costumes to build an association between their brand and their audience.

You don’t, however, have to be an international company to have a brand mascot. Small businesses can use mascot marketing to reach and connect with their customers.
