John Wood Community College was founded in 1974, and named after John Wood, the 12th Governor of Illinois (1860-1861) and the first settler of Quincy, Illinois. John played an important role in the settlement and development of West Central Illinois, and was considered a great leader and a statesman.
Along with academics, the college is home to four athletic teams including two men’s and two women’s teams.

The dedicated athletic department needed a new mascot to really show their team pride! JWCC contacted BAM Mascots to help them bring their vision to life.
Woody the Trail Blazer was revealed in January, 2015, to faculty and students at a special assembly at the college. Woody arrived on stage accompanied by the John Wood cheerleaders, and was an instant hit with his new fans!
"For us a trail blazer is someone who has discovered all roads and continues to go further just like John Wood did," JWCC Coordinator Of Student Life Alyssa Hummel said.
Woody's first event was to fire-up the crowd at a homecoming basketball game a few days later. SInce then, Woody has been a part of many games and events around the community, drawing the attention of everyone around him. JWCC uses their Facebook page to post school events and pictures of their mascot, which is a great way to engage followers and fans.
